Fiji Joe Turmeric Berry Oat Smoothie

Thanks to my Fiji Joe Turmeric Berry Oat Smoothie battling the flu and the common cold is a little less frightening (and unexpectedly, more delicious)! Packed with Fiji Joe Turmeric, blueberries, and ginger to boost the immune system, this beverage is both healthy and delicious! Double the win.

A healthy, yummy liquid breakfast, natural and rich in nutrients to boost your immune system and help combat colds and the flu, your body will thank you for it.

Growing up, I detested taking medicine when I got the cold or flu- my poor mother would wholeheartedly agree, prying my little fingers off my mouth to prepare me to ingest that horrid cold pink paste that’s supposed to taste like bubblegum candy– Far from it! Why didn’t this delicious concoction exist in my younger years to make the medicine go down easier? Now, the children in my family lap it up, and boy, aren’t I glad I broke that ‘tradition’?

The gorgeous Fiji Joe Turmeric Berry Oat Smoothie tastes as good as it looks thanks to that vibrant color, you guessed it, Fiji Joe Turmeric brings to the table; the fresh fruity taste and color from the blueberries and the warm, healing flavors of carefully selected spices. The result? A wonderfully delicious and healthy drink minus the guilt! Immune system-boosting and healing never tasted so good.

Let me take you through the list of ingredients and why I chose them:

Fiji Joe Turmeric contains a fat-soluble bioactive compound called curcumin. Unfortunately, curcumin is naturally poorly absorbed into your bloodstream. Enter black pepper! Black pepper, I like to buy whole dried peppercorns and grind them just before cooking. Pepper has piperine, a naturally occurring substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin in your body. Now that you’ve got your curcumin and how to maximize absorption, let’s talk about the benefits. Turmeric has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well as lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, has the potential to help your ticker along, and may help prevent cancer according to Healthline. The best part? Turmeric may help delay aging and fight age-related chronic diseases.

You may have noticed that I used honey instead of sugar. I love using organic, raw honey in my cooking instead of that processed stuff. The rawer, the better. Honey has antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial properties that help in healing wounds and aids in digestion. Honey soothes a sore throat, perfect for flu-fighting!

Ginger, along with honey soothes the sore throat and there’s something about that taste that is like healing! An age-old natural remedy, it is one of those few superfoods that live up to their term, packed with nutrients, more antioxidants, and all the good compounds like ginger to fight harmful infections, you’ll feel better in no time!

Oats are nutritious little things that offer numerous health benefits too when eaten daily. There is a fiber in oats called beta-glucan. This boosts your body’s ability to curb infections. I added oats to this recipe because it keeps you fuller for longer; and together with greek yogurt (try to find a yogurt that is enriched with Vitamin D), may promote the health of the naturally occurring bacteria in your gut and reduce the seriousness of your cold.

Enriched Almond milk is a nutritious dairy alternative, again, high in vitamin D which helps to reduce the chances of you developing the flu, according to 2010 research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Despite the obvious, colorful, sweet, and delicious, blueberries contain high levels of antioxidants. These babies help reduce inflammation and keep you healthy. In addition to that, blueberries may reduce your risk of heart disease, lower high blood pressure, help maintain brain activity, improve memory, and get this– the anthocyanins found in blueberries may have anti-diabetic properties for your body! The best part of this smoothie recipe is that it is quite flexible, so adjust as you wish to suit your taste buds, HOWEVER, to battle cases of flu and colds, I strongly recommend keeping the ingredients mentioned in the description but adding on extra ingredients to your liking.
